Recently, Lexus  has rolled out a slew of minimal, almost mundane revisions to its 2009 model-year IS sedan. But there is one a real development on the horizon -- the addition of a new convertible version called the IS 250 C. Proof that it indeed is an all-new model is the sharing of only its hood, headlamps, door handles, and mirror with sedan counterparts -- all other sheetmetal panels are unique to the convertible version.
Lexus designers focused a lot of attention on keeping the convertible's livability on par with that of its IS sedans. Helping them to do so is an all-new acoustic glass windshield said to effectively reduce in-cabin wind noise. Together with thicker seals on the car's doors, windows, and three-piece aluminum roof, the IS 250 C achieves a low Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) rating. Distinct on its folding top is a roof-brake system that ensures its smooth, non-jittery opening and closing.
Even with completely revised sheetmetal and a foldable hardtop, the IS convertible exhibits only a slightly higher drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd compared to the sedan's 0.27 Cd. Engineers used aerodynamic underbody panels to help keep the car as aerodynamic as possible. As with all convertibles, trunk space is fairly limited, and to compensate for its loss of storage, engineers tagged two more inches onto the car's rear overhang. With the top stowed away, one golf bag can easily fit out back, while in coupe form, two can be stored.
Within the cabin, the IS 250 C maintains all IS sedan amenities, but also features two systems unique to the model. Both the car's stereo system and climate control are speed and top sensitive, meaning their volume and air flow fluctuate based on the car's speed and top configuration. For the convertible, front seats employ an automated 'fold and slide' feature for easier egression and ingression of backseat passengers.
A more powerful IS 350 C variant has also been confirmed in Paris and is due to market next year. The two convertibles will utilize the current sedan's 2.5L, 204-hp V-6 that is mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission (IS 250). A 3.5-liter, 306-hp V-6 joined to a six-speed automatic gearbox (IS 350) will be available optionally. Yet another IS model is still making its way around the rumormill called the IS 300 C, and is expected to slot in between the two confirmed drop-tops. No word on its development has been revealed thus far.
